C9 Trail report:
[RCSR trails of Pittstown and Schaghticoke]              Updated 1:00 PM Sunday February 28, 2010

All trails are closed

The warm weather and rain has melted away most of the snow and made a mess on the trails

Conditions

Description

Closed

Trails have large sections standing water, slushy snow, lack of snow, exposed rocks, exposed stumps

One landowner has closed gates to close trail access due to lack of snow

Trail change:

S93 – between Fisherman’s Lane and S92 “the old railroad bed” is now open with gated access.

·         The landowner of S93 has livestock within an electric fenced area and has agreed to allow usage of the snowmobile trail as long as the gates are reclosed and the livestock are not disturbed

·         Signs are posted on both ends of this section, reminding riders to reclose the gates after passage.

===========================================================================

Trail usage misconduct is already upsetting some land ownersposted 1/14/2010

Landowners or land leasers are helping the snowmobile clubs and snowmobile riders by granting us permission to use there land, in return most only ask to comply with the Snowmobiling rules and ethics of the trails

Ø       We’re asking all snowmobilers to comply with the rules and ethics of the trails. Also to help by asking violators to please obey the rules and not give the landowner a reason to close their section of the trail.

Ø       Although the trails are not open due to lack of snow and most of us haven’t even considered riding yet, the club has been getting some bad reports about misuse.

·         Dirt bikes, ATVs, or any other wheeled motor vehicles are prohibited from riding on the C9 corridor or secondary trails unless the rider owns or leases the land they are riding on

§         Dirt bikes have been traveling the trails between RT 7 and the Pittstown State land. If you see someone riding a dirt bike or ATV on the trails, please ask them to stay off the snowmobile trails.

·         4” or more of snow is needed to ride these trails

§         There should not be any riding unless there is. This could do damaged to winter crops, landscape, and your snowmobile.

·         Stay on the trail or stay home

§         Our trails all exceed NYS requirements of trail width, but early season riders tracks are well beyond staying between the signs of marked trails or cutting across a wide sweeping turn. The areas outside the marked trails are not authorized riding areas and could be a destroying a winter planted crop, on some else’s property, or a hazardous area. Please stay between the signs marking the trails.

SNOWMOBILING ETHICS and RULES OF THE TRAILS

·         The snowmobile trails maintained by this club are closed, until covered by a minimum of 4 inches of snow.

·         All New York State Snowmobile laws apply

·         Don't Drink and Drive.

·         Yield right of way to the groomers, they may be on our trails at any time of day

·         Riding the trails is a privilege, not a right.

·         Remember most trails are on private property; show consideration to the landowners.

·         All Snowmobiles MUST be registered and insured.

·         All Snowmobiler's MUST wear helmets.

·         Youths 10-18 must have a snowmobile safety certificate to operate alone.

·         Do not "litter", carry out what you carry in.

·         Stay on marked trails; obey ALL signs, including highway signs.

·         Travel in single file and do not tailgate, always keep right.

·         Reduce speed at night; never over drive your headlight.

·         All wheeled motorized vehicles are restricted from these trails, unless you own or lease the land you’re riding on (law enforcement may ask you to prove it).

Word of advice: Police officers often patrol our trails and will ticket violators.

Trail Expansions

Notice to:

Other adjoining Clubs

or Rens. County land owners:

Our trail committee is always looking to expand and adjoin the trails.

Contact us at info@rc-snow-riders.com if you would like to donate riding privileges on your privately owned land. Please include as much information about your proposal and the surrounding land owners.

The committee will contact you if your adjoining access routes can improve the snowmobile trail network.
